Sooners Picked Fifth in Preseason Big 12 Poll
NORMAN – Oklahoma was picked fifth in the 2018 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll, which was released on Thursday.
The order of finish was determined by the league’s head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own team.
Baylor was picked by the league’s head coaches to win the conference crown with eight first-place votes (80 points). The Lady Bears were followed by Texas (72 points, two first-place votes), West Virginia (65 points), TCU (49 points), OU (47 points), Iowa State (44 points), Oklahoma State (34 points), Kansas State (29 points), Kansas (21 points) and Texas Tech (9 points).
The Sooners have finished higher than where they picked in the Big 12 Preseason 13 times under head coach Sherri Coale. Oklahoma has won at least 10 Big 12 games 12 times in the last 13 seasons.
The Sooners return two starters from last year’s team that advanced to the program’s 19th consecutive NCAA Tournament. Sophomore guard Shaina Pellington, who was selected to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team on Wednesday, is OU’s leading returning scorer from last season after averaging 13.1 points per game. The Sooners also bring back sophomore guard Ana Llanusa, who averaged 12.6 points per contest and was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection along with earning Big 12 All-Freshman honors a year ago.
OU’s six-member signing class was ranked No. 9 nationally by Prospect Nation and No. 17 overall by ESPN HoopGurlz.
OU begins its 2018-19 schedule on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. CT with an exhibition game at Lloyd Noble Center against Northeastern State. The Sooners open the regular season on Nov. 9 against Western Kentucky. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT.
