NORMAN – Senior Lily Miyazaki has been named the Big 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year for women’s tennis, the conference announced Wednesday.

Miyazaki, who graduated in December with a degree in mathematics and is now pursuing a Master’s in management information systems, has maintained a 4.0 grade point average through her entire academic career.

The Big 12 Conference names a Scholar-Athlete of the Year in each conference-sponsored sport. Each Big 12 institution nominates one individual per sport with the winners selected by a vote of the league head coaches for that sport, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

In 2017, Miyazaki was named co-recipient of the award, sharing the honor with Baylor’s Blair Shankle.

The Tokyo, Japan, native has garnered numerous awards for her work in the classroom, most recently the Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship, which is given to two athletes from each Big 12 institution.  Miyazaki is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection and winner of the NCAA’s Elite 90 Award, the honor given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at each of the NCAA’s 90 finals sites.

The Sooners return to action in the fall. The schedule will be released at a later date.
