NORMAN — University of Oklahoma men's golfer Griffin Pierce and women's tennis player Lily Miyazaki are among the 20 student-athletes from Big 12 Conference schools who were named recipients of the 2017-18 Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship, the league office announced Thurdsay. The amount of each scholarship is $10,000.

The scholarships are named in honor of the late Dr. Prentice Gautt, a former Big 12 Conference staff member and student services' pioneer who passed away in March 2005. Gautt, who earned his undergraduate degree from OU in 1960, broke new ground in 1956 as the first African-American football student-athlete at the university under hall-of-fame head coach Bud Wilkinson.

A two-time All-Big Eight Conference football selection and CoSIDA Academic All-American, Gautt played professionally for the Cleveland Browns in 1960 and the St. Louis Cardinals from 1961-67.

The list of all-time recipients of the scholarship has grown to 401 since the inception of the league in 1996-97. Starting in 2002-03, additional funding increased scholarship award winners to two per member institution.

To date the Big 12 has provided more than $2.9 million for postgraduate education. The individual grants began at $2,500 in 1996-97, were raised to $5,000 in 1999 and increased to $6,900 for 2004-05. The awards climbed to $7,500 in 2006-07, moved to $9,000 in 2011-12 and to $10,000 in 2013-14.

Miyazaki ends her Oklahoma career as one of the most decorated Sooners in program history. A native of Tokyo, Japan, Miyazaki played at No. 1 singles for the entirety of her career and was a three-time All-Big 12 Singles First Team selection. She was named the 2017 ITA Central Region Player to Watch and earned Co-Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors as well as ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year recognition in 2015. She made history in 2017 when she was selected for the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships, becoming just the third Sooner ever to earn an entry in the tournament.

Miyazaki has cemented her place in program history with a career singles record of 96-35, which ties her for third all-time in singles victories. Miyazaki is fourth in career winning percentage (minimum 70 matches) with a .731 mark, and is tied for sixth in program history for most singles wins in a season after posting a record of 29-8 during her junior campaign.

Miyazaki excelled in the classroom, finishing her undergraduate career with a 4.0 GPA. Her work off the court garnered her multiple awards, including three Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors, back-to-back CoSIDA Academic All-District Women's At-Large Team awards, ITA All-Academic team recognition, and Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year co-honors in 2017.

Miyazaki graduated in December and began graduate work in Management Information Systems in January of 2018, and has maintained a 4.0 GPA in that program. She is the second OU women's tennis player to earn the Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship, following Christina Baxley, who received the award for the 2007-08 year.

Pierce was a captain on the OU's men's golf team and participated in four events during his career. Pierce has been a leader in the classroom, earning Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2018.

He was also named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2016 and was an Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team in 2015. Pierce graduated in May with a degree in accounting. Pierce is the first OU men's golfer to win the award.

Criteria for the Gautt Scholarship include a cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, participation in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at the nominee's respective institution and completion of athletics eligibility. The student-athletes also must graduate from their respective member institutions within 15 months of their selection for a postgraduate scholarship and are expected to enroll in graduate/professional schools within two years of graduation.

Three faculty representatives, one senior woman administrator and one director of athletics form the selection panel for the awards.
