Three Sooners Picked on Day Two of MLB Draft

NORMAN – Three University of Oklahoma baseball players were selected on the second day of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft to bring the Sooners’ total to five through the first 10 rounds of the draft.

Junior right-handed pitcher Jake Irvin was selected in the fourth round as the No. 131 pick overall of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals. Junior right-handed pitcher Austin Hansen was picked 252nd overall and was selected in the eighth round by the Houston Astros. Junior outfielder Cade Harris was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 10th round with 306th overall pick.

The trio joins OU’s Kyler Murray (No. 9 overall, Oakland Athletics) and Steele Walker (No. 46 overall, Chicago White Sox), who were both drafted Monday night. OU’s five selections through 10 rounds are the most for the Sooners since 2009.  

Irvin, a native of Bloomington, Minn., finished with a 6-2 record and 3.41 ERA in 16 starts during his junior season. Irvin recorded 115 strikeouts in 2018, which is tied for the 14th-most in OU single-season history. He was voted to the All-Big 12 First Team in 2018 and named an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention pick in 2017. Irvin was also named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team in 2017 and 2018.

For his career, Irvin has totaled an 18-7 record in 38 starts and 44 appearances. Irvin’s 241 career strikeouts are the 12th-most all-time by an OU pitcher.

Hansen was named to the All-Big 12 First Team this season and led the Sooners with nine saves, posting a 3.29 ERA in 38.1 innings pitched. The junior made a team-high 34 appearances out of the bullpen and struck out 52 while limiting opponents to a .224 average.

Hansen’s nine saves in 2018 are tied for the sixth-most in OU single-season history and tied for eighth all-time in program history. The Lenexa, Kan., native owns a 3.24 career ERA at OU with 64 appearances and eight starts. Hansen has a career record of 9-4 and has pitched 98.1 innings during his three years as a Sooner.

Harris leads the NCAA in walks this season with 66 and finished just two shy of tying the OU single-season record. As a junior, Harris hit .274 with five home runs, recorded a team-high 22 doubles and finished with 32 RBI as OU’s leadoff hitter. The Leona, Texas, native also led the Sooners with 11 stolen bases and picked up 25 RBI in 63 games, all starts.

For his career, Harris ranks sixth all-time at OU with 127 career walks in three seasons as a Sooner. Harris’ 22 doubles in 2018 are tied for the 12th-most by a Sooner in program single-season history.

A total of 268 players have been drafted into Major League Baseball out of Oklahoma since 1967 and at least one player has been drafted every year since 1970. OU has had at least one player picked in the top 10 in every MLB Draft since 2011.
