NORMAN –University of Oklahoma head soccer coach Matt Potter and Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Joe Castiglione released Oklahoma’s 2019 soccer schedule Monday.

The Sooners will play 19 regular season contests, including eight home matches on John Crain Field at the OU Soccer Complex.

“The 2019 schedule reflects the ambition and expectations of being part of OU Athletics,” Potter said. “The traditions of competing on the biggest of stages are what our athletes look forward to and (assistant coach) Paul (Hart) has put together a schedule that challenges us as competitors, players and staff.”

OU opens the season in Norman against 2018 America East Champion Albany on Thursday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m. The Sooners will then travel to SEC foe Arkansas on Sunday, Aug. 25 for the Razorback’s home opener. This will be the first matchup of the two teams since the 2014 NCAA Tournament and the first OU trip to Fayetteville since 2004.

After returning home for the annual non-conference Bedlam matchup on Aug. 30, the Sooners will hit the road for five straight games. OU will face in-state rival Tulsa on Sunday, Sept. 1, before traveling west to face Arizona (Sept. 6) and Arizona State (Sept. 8).

Wrapping up the road non-conference slate is a pair of matches in Nebraska. OU will play at Nebraska on Friday, Sept. 13 before heading to Creighton on Sunday, Sept. 15.

The non-conference schedule ends with a pair of matches against teams from the American Athletic Conference. The Sooners will host SMU on Thursday, Sept. 19 and Houston on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Conference play will have a new look as the league transitions from a Friday/Sunday schedule to Thursday/Sunday. Big 12 play opens on the road as OU travels to Fort Worth, Texas, to face TCU Thursday, Sept. 26. The road trip continues to Lubbock, Texas, for a match against Texas Tech (Sept. 29).

“The change in format to Thursday-Sunday in conference play gives our athletes the opportunity to perform on more days rest.” Potter said. “This should improve the quality of games, giving them time to recover to go again. A decision I support as today’s athletes and our sport evolves.”

The Sooners return to the friendly confines of John Crain Field for a three-match homestand, beginning with Kansas State on Thursday, Oct. 3. The following weekend, OU will host Kansas (Oct. 10) and Baylor (Oct. 13).

The road schedule concludes with trips to Iowa State (Oct. 17), West Virginia (Oct. 20) and Oklahoma State (Oct. 25).

The regular season slate will wrap-up with the Red River Rivalry and a match against Texas on Thursday, Oct. 31.

“Our home schedule welcomes some talented teams for the community to see some great soccer and we look forward to their continued support of the program,” Potter said. “The environment created at home games is one that the players thrive off and certainly helps to energize us all. We look forward to representing the OU name and fulfilling the goals of the season.”

Nine of OU’s 2018 regular season opponents competed in the NCAA Tournament last year, including six Big 12 teams. Baylor was a quarterfinalist, while Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, TCU, Texas Tech and West Virginia all advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Albany and Texas each appeared in the first round.

The Big 12 Championship will again take place at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo., the seventh straight year the venue will host the event. The conference’s top eight teams will compete in a single-elimination tournament from Nov. 3-10 as they vie for a Big 12 title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
