NORMAN – University of Oklahoma head men’s basketball coach Lon Kruger announced on Wednesday the addition of Alvin "Pooh" Williamson as assistant coach.

Born and raised in Beggs, Okla., Williamson brings over two decades of coaching experience to Norman, including eight seasons in the Big 12. He has spent 15 of his last 18 seasons coaching and recruiting for colleges in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas.

"We're excited to welcome Coach Williamson and his family," said Kruger. "Throughout his career, Pooh has built his reputation as a good teacher of the game, strong recruiter and respected mentor. He has lived, played and coached in Oklahoma and will be a fantastic fit to our staff and family."

Williamson joins the Sooners after one season at Miami. Prior to his time with the Hurricanes, he spent the previous five seasons under Tubby Smith at Texas Tech (2013-16) and Memphis (2016-18).

“I'm thrilled about this opportunity to come back into the Big 12 and work with such a high-caliber leader in Coach Kruger,” said Williamson. “Having an opportunity to work with him and his staff at a program like Oklahoma enticed me a lot. I'm glad to be coming home to Oklahoma.”

As a player, Williamson was a four-year letterwinner at the University of Tulsa under Smith and helped lead the Golden Hurricane in back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in 1994 and 1995. He earned both All-MVC First-Team and All-MVC Defensive-Team accolades.

After beginning his coaching career as an assistant at Washington State (1996-98) and Illinois State (1998-2000), Williamson returned to his alma mater from 2001-05 and served as the interim head coach in the 2004-05 season.

Williamson has also coached as an assistant at Wichita State (2005-07), Texas A&M (2007-11), SMU (2011-12) and TCU (2012-13). Throughout his career, he has been on the staff of eight NCAA Tournament teams.

He will be joined in Norman by his wife, Rosemary, and sons Jamal and Josh.

Williamson rounds out the Sooner coaching staff and will assistant coaches Carlin Hartman (three seasons) and recent hire Jim Molinari.

Oklahoma returns three starters from the 2018-19 squad. Kristian Doolittle and Brady Manek both ranked in OU's top three for points, rebounds and blocks this season, while Jamal Bieniemy led the Sooners in both assists and steals. The Sooners' incoming recruiting class is listed in the top 20 nationally.
