Sooners Set for NCAA Outdoor Championships

NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma track and field team begins competition Wednesday at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas, on the campus of the University of Texas.

Eight Sooners plus three relay squads qualified for the championships, set to begin Wednesday at 2 p.m. CT at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

The men’s 4x100-meter relay team of Jackson Webb, Joseph Sheffield, Xavier Brown and Quoi Ellis will be the first Sooners to take the track on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in the 4x1 semifinals. The squad has posted five wins this season as a group and qualified to the championships with the fifth fastest time at the West regional.

Sophomore Joseph Sheffield will run in the men’s 100-meter dash semis tomorrow at 5:45 p.m. after the Garland, Texas native qualified with a 10.36 regional time.

The women’s competition begins Thursday with four Sooners competing in individual events and two relay squads racing in semifinal action.

The women’s 4x1 relay team of Camri Austin, Dai’Lyn Merriweather, Ja’Leesa Giles and Kennedy Blackmon will compete at 7 p.m. in the semifinals after qualifying with a season-best time of 44.51 seconds at regionals.

Senior Meagan Gray will make her first NCAA Outdoors appearance on Thursday evening at 7:30 in the women’s pole vault. Gray qualified by clearing 14-2 (4.32m) at the West Preliminary in Sacramento.

Two Sooner throws members will compete in the women’s shot put in freshman Faith Ette and junior Meia Gordon. Gordon is making her second consecutive outdoor championship appearance while Ette qualified for her first with a big personal best throw of 53-2.75 (16.22m) at regionals.

Sophomore Dai’Lyn Merriweather qualified for her first NCAA Championship with a PR time of 23.02 in the 200 meters in Sacramento. She will race in the 200 semifinals Thursday night at 9:15.

Later Thursday night, OU’s women’s 4x4 relay team of Blackmon, D. Merriweather, Giles and Jai’Lyn Merriweather will run in the 4x4 semis after advancing to Austin with a 3:35.92 regional time.

OU’s horizontal jumps group qualified three student-athletes to the outdoor championship with men’s triple jumpers Roman Mason and Papay Glaywulu and women’s triple jumper Essence Thomas. Mason and Glaywulu will jump Friday at 7:40 p.m. before Thomas jumps in the women’s competition on Saturday at 5:40 p.m.

Glaywulu claimed second-team All-America honors at last year’s outdoor championship while Mason and Thomas will be making their first NCAA Outdoors appearance.

Those on the track can advance to Friday and Saturday’s finals racing by advancing out of semifinal competition on Wednesday and Thursday.
