Sooners Advance to Match Play as No. 5 Seed

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Oklahoma men’s golf team will compete in the match play portion of the NCAA Championships for the fourth straight season. The Sooners finished stroke play tied for fourth place on Monday to secure their spot among the top eight teams at the NCAA Championships. 

On a difficult scoring day, OU played well down the stretch over the final nine holes and posted a 300 (+12) during the final round of stroke play. The Sooners claimed the No. 5 seed in match play.

"We played really solid the last two days and it gave us a cushion today," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "Our guys did what they had to do today to advance. We've got a fighting chance and that's all we can ask for as we head into match play."

The top eight teams at the end of stroke play qualify for the quarterfinals of match play, which begins Tuesday. No. 1 Oklahoma State claimed first with an overall 1136 (-16) and will face SMU, who placed eighth at 1196 (+44) and defeated Clemson in a playoff to advance. The Sooners will take on Texas, who also finished with an 1180 (+28). The Longhorns will be seeded No. 4, holding the seeding tiebreaker over OU.  

Wake Forest took third (1172; +20) and will face Stanford, who place sixth (1168; +16). Vanderbilt placed second (1137; (+8) and will take on Texas (1168; +16).The winners of each match will advance to the semifinals, which are scheduled to begin Tuesday afternoon.

Oklahoma is the only team to qualify for the match play portion of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships in each of the last four seasons. Seniors Brad Dalke and Blaine Hale became the first players in NCAA history to compete in the match play portion of the NCAA Championships in four consecutive seasons.

Freshman Patrick Welch was OU’s top finisher, tying for 11th place with a four-day 291 (+3). The freshman picked up his fifth top-20 finish of the year as Welch recorded a 75 (+3) during the final round of stroke play. Welch earned All-America honors for placing in the top 15 at the event.

Hale shared 26th place at 295 (+7). The senior recorded a 77 (+5) during Monday’s final round and picked up three birdies. 

Junior Garettt Reband tied for 30th place with a 72-hole 297 (+9). For the second straight day, Reband turned in OU’s best round as he posted a 74 (+2) on Monday.

Redshirt junior Quade Cummins recorded a 74 (+2) and finished in a tie for 47th place at 302 (+12). Cummins played the front nine at even-par and logged two birdies.

Dalke claimed a piece of 71st place, carding a four-round 309 (+21). The senior finished the final round of the stroke play with a 78 (+6).

The Sooners will square off with the Longhorns in the quarterfinals of match play on Tuesday with tee  times beginning at 7:50 a.m. CT. The Golf Channel will televise competition live from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. CT, and pregame coverage is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. CT.
