OU Concludes First Round at NCAA Championships
NORMAN – The No. 6 Oklahoma men’s golf team recorded a 305 (+17) during the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. The national tournament is being held at the par-72, 7,550-yard Blessings Golf Club.
The Sooners finished the opening day of action tied for 14th place, tied with No. 15 South Carolina and No. 22 Liberty.
The top 15 teams and top nine individuals not on those teams after 54 holes of stroke play will move on to compete in one final round of stroke play Monday. Following Monday’s round, the top eight squads will advance to match play competition.
No. 1 seed Oklahoma State leads the 30-team field at 290 (+2), followed by No. seed 10 Stanford in second place at 291 (+3). No. 11 seed Auburn and No. 12 seed California share third place at 292 (+4). Texas A&M and Wake Forest hold a claim on fifth place after 18 holes at 296 (+8)
The Sooners are making their ninth consecutive appearance in the tournament and join Illinois and Texas as the only programs to reach the national tournament for nine straight years.
In his first action at the NCAA Championships, freshman Patrick Welch led the Sooners with a 75 (+3) in the first round. The freshman logged three birdies and played the front nine at even-par to start off his round. Welch is tied for 36th place on the individual leaderboard.
Seniors Brad Dalke and Blaine Hale share 53rd place with an opening-round 76 (+4). Both players picked up a pair of birdies during Friday’s action.
Junior Garett Reband recorded a 77 (+5) and is tied for 87th place after the first round. Redshirt junior Quade Cummins shares 106th place and finished with a 79 (+7).
OU’s second round will begin at 7:12 a.m. CT on Saturday from hole No. 10. The Sooners will be paired with Texas and Vanderbilt.
