NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma track and field team continues postseason competition this weekend in Sacramento, Calif., at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.

Held at Hornet Stadium on the campus of the University of California-Sacramento, the three-day meet will feature the top student-athletes in the NCAA's West region competing for spots at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas, June 5-8.

The Sooners have 34 qualifiers (16 men, 18 women) competing at the West Regional. To advance to Austin, qualifiers must finish in the top 12 in their respective events at prelims. For relay teams, the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West Preliminary round sites qualify to nationals. The only auto-qualifiers for the national championships are the student-athletes who compete in the combined events (decathlon, heptathlon).

OU returns to the track after hosting the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in Norman, May 10-12. The Sooners' women's squad took third, while the men finished sixth. Redshirt senior Sarah Scott highlighted the championship meet for the Sooners, winning her second consecutive Big 12 championship in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Scott finished in a time of 10:15.83 to claim the crown and her second Big 12 title.

Sophomore Cooper Campbell also impressed at the conference meet, setting a school record in the men's shot put. Campbell tossed the shot a program-best 64-6 (19.66m) to claim runner-up in the event.

Additionally, OU's relay teams put together a solid showing in Norman. The men's 4x100-meter squad of Jackson Webb, Joseph Sheffield, Xavier Brown and Quoi Ellis ran the second-fastest 4x1 in program history and quickest since 1992, clocking a 38.99 to take second. The women's 4x4 team of Dai'Lyn Merriweather, Kennedy Blackmon, Ja'Leesa Giles and Jai'Lyn Merriweather posted a season-best 3:32.61 to rank as the fourth-fastest 4x400-meter relay in school history.

This weekend's preliminary is set to start at 2 p.m. CT Thursday with the men's hammer throw. The meet will have live results available through Flash Results and be streamed via FloTrack, available on a subscription basis.
