Milligan Begins NCAA Championship Chase Friday
NORMAN – After claiming the NCAA Norman Regional title last week, Oklahoma sophomore Kaitlin Milligan heads to the 2019 NCAA Women's Golf Championships, played May 17-22 at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
Milligan tees off at the par-73, 6,473-yard course on Friday at 12:50 p.m. CT on hole No. 10.
“This week is a great opportunity for Kaitlin,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “She’s had a great sophomore year so far is deserving to be here competing. We are excited for her to go out on the biggest stage and showcase her abilities.”
Milligan qualified for the championship as one of three individuals from non-advancing teams at the NCAA Norman Regional. She tied for first in the event by shooting a 208 (-8) on the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. Milligan entered the final round five strokes out of first with a 36-hole score of 140 (-4) but sunk six birdies en route to a final-round score of 68 (-4).
The sophomore heads to Fayetteville with nine top-20 finishes over her last 10 tournaments, including six in the top 10. Boasting a season stroke average of 71.91, she is on pace to break the program record of 72.27.
Carding 115 birdies in her 32 rounds this season, Milligan ranks fourth in the country for total birdies.
Born and raised in Norman, Milligan enters the NCAA Championship ranked No. 30 in the Golfstat Rankings and No. 50 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. Additionally, she is ranked No. 152 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (49th among Americans).
Friday is the first of three guaranteed rounds. Should Milligan make the cut after 54 holes (top nine individuals not on an advancing team), she will compete in a final round of stroke play televised by Golf Channel on Monday.
