Record-Tying Eight Sooners Named All-Region
NORMAN — The No. 1/1 Oklahoma softball team tied a school record by placing all eight of its nominees on the 2019 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-Central Regional Team, the NFCA announced Thursday.
Seniors Falepolima Aviu, Caleigh Clifton and Sydney Romero, juniors Mariah Lopez and Giselle Juarez, sophomore Jocelyn Alo and freshman Grace Green were all selected for the All-Region First Team. Senior Shay Knighten was placed on the All-Region Second Team.
Seven first-team selections surpasses the previous OU record of five (2005, '07, '15, '16, '17) and leads the nation this year.
Overall, this marks the fifth time in six seasons that OU has had eight selections. The Sooners are one of four teams to have eight All-Region honorees this year, joining Florida State, James Madison and Washington.
The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s 10 regions with first, second and third teams selected for each region. The all-region teams were voted on by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2019 NFCA Division I All-American teams.
The 2019 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at approximately 4 p.m. CT on Wednesday, May 29, via NFCA.org.
The Sooners return to action this weekend as they host Notre Dame, Wisconsin and UMBC in the NCAA Norman Regional at Marita Hynes Field.
