Sooners Kick Off Conference Meet in Norman

NORMAN — The Oklahoma track and field teams began competition at the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Championship in Norman on Friday. Four Sooners brought home top-five finishes including two in the men's hammer throw. 

The meet kicked off with the combined events with two Sooners competing in both the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon. 

Freshman Kristo Simulask started the weekend strong with personal bests in the first two decathlon events. Simulask clocked a PR 11.43 in the 100-meter dash before leaping a PR 23-6 (7.16m) in the long jump. The Estonia native holds a tie for first after the first five events with 3,942 points. Fellow freshman Will Kubicek tallied 3,020 points to sit 11th after day one. 

In the women's heptathlon, senior Makayla Stephens and freshman Madison Langley-Walker are in third and ninth place, respectively, after the first four events on Friday. 

The Sooners put two in the top five in the men's hammer throw with freshman Bayley Campbell taking third (214-7, 65.41m) and sophomore Edward Jeans placing fourth (198-0, 60.36m). The two combined to score 11 points for the OU men's team.

OU saw another top-five finish and a personal best in the women's hammer throw. Sophomore Lauren Jones took third with a throw of 181-02 (55.21m), while junior Camille Burge registered a PR of 171-01 (52.15m) to place sixth. 

Sophomore Josh Haus brought in more points for the Sooners' men's squad, taking a third-place finish in the men's javelin throw. Haus' best throw reached 209-8 (63.90m) to place third and score six points for the Sooners. 

In the women's javelin, Stephens, also competing in the heptathlon, placed 10th with a throw of 111-09.75 (34.08m). 

The men's 10,000-meter run capped Friday's competition. Seniors Jacob Janzen and Brendan Taylor placed 12th and 15th, with respective times of 31:01.66 and 31:40.18. 

After three scored events on both the men's and women's side, the OU men sit second with 17 points while the women hold fifth with nine points.

Action continues Saturday morning starting with the decathlon 100-meter hurdles at 10 a.m. CT. The meet runs through Saturday and Sunday at John Jacobs Track and Field Complex. Walk-up tickets are available at the track and can also be purchased online at SoonerSports.com/Tickets.
