Sooners Prepped for Summer of USAG Events
NORMAN – Although the NCAA season of competition has concluded, numerous current, former and future University of Oklahoma gymnasts will continue national and international competition in the months to come.
Last weekend, OU signees Lazarus Barnhill, Jack Freeman and Brayton Williams competed at the men's Junior Olympic National Championships in Reno, Nev. The four-day USA Gymnastics meet held at Reno Sparks Convention Center determined junior elite division qualifiers to the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in August.
Barnhill, out of Cypress Academy in Houston, claimed the junior elite level 10 all-around title for 18 year-olds, while Freeman, also a Cypress product, took third. With their placements, the two qualified to the U.S. Championships. Williams, who trains at GymTek Academy in Knoxville, Tenn., finished fifth in the all-around at the J.O. meet.
As for current and former Sooners, first up will be a joint training camp with the Japanese national team in Funabashi, Japan, June 15-21. Current U.S. national team members Allan Bower, Yul Moldauer, Genki Suzuki and Colin Van Wicklen will be a part of the U.S. delegation that will travel overseas to the camp, along with OU head coach Mark Williams.

Later this summer will be the 2019 U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Kansas City, Mo., slated for August 8-11 at the Sprint Center. Five OU gymnasts automatically qualified to the championships based on performances at this year's Winter Cup and NCAA Championships.
2019 graduates Levi Anderson, Moldauer and Suzuki, along with '17 alumni Bower and Van Wicklen will compete in the senior division set to take place on the 8th and 10th. Signees Barnhill and Freeman will take part in the junior elite division competition, also on the 8th and 10th prior to the senior sessions.
Three current Sooners will have the chance to qualify for the championships through the 2019 Men's National Qualifier, held in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Rising juniors Gage Dyer and Alexei Vernyi and senior-to-be Matt Wenske will compete in the three-day meet July 5-7 that will determine a minimum of 12 additional senior division qualifiers to the U.S. Championships.
