Sweep Propels OU into NCAA Second Round
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 21 Oklahoma men’s tennis team swept No. 29 Arizona 4-0 Saturday in College Station to advance to the NCAA second round.
OU claimed the doubles point before notching singles wins from Alex Bakshi, Mason Beiler and Jochen Bertsch to complete the shutout of the Wildcats.
“I was really happy with the attitude and business-like mentality we came out with today. Our guys were really focused from the very beginning,” said OU head coach Nick Crowell. “The doubles had some ups and downs but we talked about adversity all week and these guys handled it really well and ended up pulling the doubles point.”
Spencer Papa and Max Stewart got things rolling in doubles with a dominant 6-2 victory over Alejandro Regaunt and Jonas Maier on court three.
Jake Van Emburgh and Ferran Calvo sealed the deal after a 7-5 win over Jonas Ziverts and Filip Malbasic at the No. 2 line. The duo won four straight games to work their way back from a 3-5 deficit for the victory.
When play was halted, No. 25 Bakshi and Stefano Tsorotiotis were tied at 2-all in a tiebreaker with Igor Karpovets and Stewart Block.
No. 44 Bakshi struck first in singles with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of No. 79 Malbasic 6-2, 6-3 on court two. The win was good for Bakshi’s fourth straight over a ranked opponent. The senior has now defeated eight players ranked in the ITA release this season.
On court five, Beiler took down Carlos Hassey 6-3 6-4 to push OU’s lead in the match to 3-0.
Bertsch was the clincher for the Sooners. The junior defeated Maier 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 line to seal the win.
When play was halted, No. 32 Papa led No. 66 Jonas Ziverts 3-2 in the third set on court one. Papa gave up the first 6-1 before firing back to take set two 6-3.
No. 77 Van Emburgh was tied at 2-all in the second with Karpovets on court three. Van Emburgh held on to win set one in a tiebreaker 7-6 (5).
Calvo led Reguant 5-3 in the second on court four. The Sooner dropped the first frame 6-4.
“Our guys were able to compose themselves after the doubles and we got four of the six first sets which I think was key. Jake getting that tiebreaker down there at No. 3 really turned the momentum in our favor.” Crowell said. “We had three guys get off the courts quick. I thought [Bertsch] did a great job playing his game and Alex [Bakshi] was on fire down there at two. Mason Beiler was just super solid. Now we’re just turning our attention to tomorrow.”
The Sooners will face the winner of Texas A&M-Texas A&M Corpus Christi tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT with the winner of that match advancing to the NCAA Super Regionals.
