NORMAN – Three Sooners have been selected for the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships, the organization announced Tuesday.

Spencer Papa and Alex Bakshi have both earned berths in the 64-player singles draw, while Bakshi and Stefano Tsorotiotis were selected to compete in the 32-team doubles tournament.

The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 16-19.

This marks the third straight season and sixth time in program history that Oklahoma has sent multiple players to the NCAA singles tournament. An OU doubles team has not played in the championships since 2017, when the doubles tandem of Papa and Andrew Harris brought home the Sooners’ first-ever NCAA individual title.

Seniors Papa and Bakshi will make their second career appearances at the NCAA singles tournament while Tsorotiotis will make his debut.

Papa is currently ranked No. 36 in the most recent ITA release. The Edmond, Okla., native has compiled an 8-7 record on the season with five wins over ranked opponents. Papa represented OU in the singles tournament in 2017.

Bakshi checks in at No. 43 in the ITA rankings with a 10-5 record. Bakshi has defeated eight ranked opponents this season with his highest-ranked victory over No. 7 Yuya Ito in the Big 12 Championship semifinals.

Bakshi played in the 2018 NCAA singles tournament where he advanced to the second round.

Tsorotiotis and Bakshi are 6-3 on the season. The duo has defeated ranked opponents in three of its last four matches, including No. 4 Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn of Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals.

Times and draws for the tournament will be announced at a later date.
