NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma rowing team concluded its regular season in Austin, Texas on Saturday at the Longhorn Invitational on Walter E. Long Lake.  The Sooners claimed important victories against ranked opponents on Friday and Saturday to finish their regular season strong as they head into preparations for the Big 12 Championship on May 19th.

The regatta was split into two rounds, with the first session held on Friday afternoon and the second session on Saturday morning, after high winds pushed Saturday morning’s first session to Friday.  OU’s First Varsity Four (C: Sydney Pino; 4: Rachel Williams; 3: Nicole Molina; 2: Abby Lange; 1: Madeleine Lage) won their Friday race with big wins over No. 10 Virginia, No. 13 Iowa and No. 18 Oregon State. They also posted the fastest time of the day in the varsity fours category with a 7:23.300, ahead of No. Texas’ 7:24.990 in the opposing heat.

The Second Varsity Eight (C: Cassidy Mulligan; 8: Frauke Berger; 7: Amy Pasque; 6: Emily Taylor; 5: Sophie Salt; 4: Rachel Della Valle; 3: Kristen Allman; 2: Erin Steele; 1: Louise Kuehster) also had strong showing in the first round of racing with wins over the No. 13 Hawkeyes and No. 18 Oregon State; they posted a time of 6:46.080, the fourth fastest time of all the 2V8+s in the racing Friday.

In the second round of racing on Saturday, OU earned three victories in the second varsity eight, first varsity four, and second varsity four racing.  The 2V8+ won an exciting final with a photo finish win over the No. 11 Southern California, and ahead of Oregon State and Notre Dame. The 2V8+ also posted the third-fastest time out of both sessions, with a time of 6:48.697. The 1V4+ won their race in dominating fashion with nearly a five-second margin over second place Oregon State and 11- and 15-second margins over USC and Notre Dame, respectively. Their time of 7:28.210 was enough to be the fastest time of the day, edging out Big 12 rival and fourth-ranked Texas’ time of 7:28.886, and clocking in ahead of No. 10 Virginia, No. 13 Iowa and 16-ranked Indiana. The 2V4+ (C: Sara Fazal; 4: Amber Templin; 3: Maia Cruse; 2: Ella Poljak; 1: Leah Pearman) wrapped up the trio of wins by winning their race with big victories over Notre Dame and Iowa.

The Sooners return to action when they head to the 2019 Big 12 Rowing Championship on May 19th in Oak Ridge, TN at Melton Lake.  OU looks to extend their season by qualifying for the NCAA Championship at the Big 12 Championship.
