Conference Championship Kicks Off Friday
LAWRENCE, Kansas – The No. 29 Oklahoma women’s tennis team is set to open the 2019 Big 12 Tennis Championship Friday with No. 23 Texas Tech in the quarterfinal round. First serve is set for 3 p.m. CT at the Sport Pavilion courts.
Recapping the Regular Season
The Sooners completed the regular season at 16-7 overall to complete OU’s best regular season since head coach Audra Cohen’s arrival in 2017. OU went 5-4 against the conference, also good for the team’s best Big 12 record since 2014. The Sooners got their first win over Baylor since 2005, shutting out the Bears 7-0 to snap the 15-year losing streak.
Oklahoma compiled a 10-3 mark in non-conference matches, taking out opponents from three of the five major conferences during that stretch: SEC (Arkansas), Pac-12 (Arizona State) and Big Ten (Purdue). The Sooners notched three wins over ranked teams during the season: No. 47 Tulsa on March 8 (4-3); No. 39 Gonzaga on March 9 (4-1) and No. 33 Kansas State March 15 (5-2).
Sooners in the Rankings
Oleksandra Korashvili is No. 31 nationally in singles and has compiled a 15-7 record primarily at the top spot. The junior has taken out six ranked opponents this season, including three in the top 25. In doubles, Jasmine Asghar and Ivana Corley are No. 63.
The Sooners have given up the doubles point just six times in 23 matches this season. OU is 14-2 in matches when it has claimed the opening point and 3-4 when dropping it. Camila Romero and Martina Capurro lead the Sooners in doubles wins with a 16-4 record. The duo went 7-1 against the conference and enters the tournament on a five-match winning streak.
Scouting Texas Tech
The No. 26 Red Raiders completed the regular season at 16-7 and 6-3 in Big 12 matches.
Felicity Maltby leads Texas Tech from the No. 1 line with a 17-5 record. Checking in at No. 18 nationally in the latest ITA rankings, Maltby is the highest-ranked player in the Big 12 conference. Two more Red Raiders have wins in double digits: Anto Stoica is 13-6 playing primarily on court four and Lana Rushs is 12-2 at the No. 6 line.
Maltby and Nell Miller own the most doubles wins of any pairing with an 11-7 record at the top spot.
The Last Time They Met
The teams clashed on April 12 in Lubbock with the Red Raiders prevailing 5-2. OU took the doubles point and Capurro tallied a singles victory in the match.

Should the Sooners win, they will the winner of Texas and Baylor in the semifinals Saturday at 3 p.m. CT.
