Lopez's One-Hitter Seals Series Win at KU
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Mariah Lopez threw a one-hit shutout to lead the No. 2/2 Oklahoma softball team to a 5-0, series-clinching win against Kansas on Saturday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark.
The Sooners (37-2, 7-0 Big 12) extended their nation-leading win streak to 27 consecutive games, good for the fourth-longest streak in program history.
OU has won 33 straight conference games, strengthening a program and Big 12 record. Additionally, the Sooners are undefeated in their last 51 conference series (47-0-4 in that span), winning or splitting every series since 2011.
Lopez improved to 14-1 on the year, striking out eight batters and walking two. She earned her sixth shutout in her sixth complete game of the year.
"Mariah was fantastic for us today," OU head coach Patty Gasso said. "I feel that on offense, we didn't swing the way we're used to... We talked about it, and we'll get it right."
Sydney Romero finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and a walk. Shay Knighten registered a pair of RBIs that put the Sooners on the board.
Oklahoma opened scoring in the first. With a pair of runners in scoring position, Knighten singled through the left side to drive in Caleigh Clifton.
The Sooners extended their advantage to three with a pair of sacrifice flies in the fourth. Clifton led off the inning with a walk before Grace Green doubled.
Knighten hit a fly ball to right field, scoring Clifton, before Nicole Mendes flew out to left to bring Green home.
OU added two runs in the top of the seventh. Eliyah Flores was hit by a pitch to open the frame, and Lynnsie Elam laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her to second.
Grace Lyons doubled to right field, driving in Flores. Romero followed with a double down the left-field line that plated Lyons.
The series finale is set for a noon CT first pitch on Sunday.
