Eight Sooners Add MPSF Academic Honors
NORMAN – Eight University of Oklahoma men’s gymnasts were recognized as Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) All-Academic selections, the conference announced Friday.
Junior Matt Wenske and seniors Levi Anderson, Peter Daggett, Grant Kell, Jake Maloley, Brian Schibler, Genki Suzuki and Cameron Wright were all honored by the conference.
In addition to MPSF honors, all eight of OU’s MPSF all-academic student-athletes were named to the Academic All-Big 12 At-Large Team earlier this week.
To qualify as an MPSF All-Academic Scholar-Athlete, gymnasts must maintain a 3.00 or better cumulative GPA, must be at least a sophomore academically and must have competed in at least 50 percent of competitions.
The Sooners had the second most selections in the conference with eight, second only to Stanford’s 13.
The Sooners claimed their eighth consecutive and 18th overall MPSF conference title last Saturday against No. 2 Stanford, No. 11 Cal and No. 13 Air Force.
OU turns its attention to the 2019 NCAA Championships in Champaign, Ill., April 19-20. The Sooners will compete in the evening session of the qualifying round on Friday, April 19 against No. 4 Illinois, No. 5 Penn State, No. 8 Iowa, No. 9 Ohio State and No. 12 Army. The team finals will be Saturday, April 20 at 6 p.m. CT.
Oklahoma is chasing its fifth consecutive national title and NCAA record 13th overall. With one more national championship, head coach Mark Williams will also hold the record for the most national titles as a head coach.
