Sooners Drop Tight Match to TCU
NORMAN – The No. 21 Oklahoma men’s tennis team suffered a narrow loss to No. 10 TCU Friday night in a match that went the distance. OU fell to the Horned Frogs 4-3.
The Sooners (14-8, 1-3 Big 12) took the doubles point and two singles wins in the contest, but came up just short.
In doubles, Alex Bakshi and Stefano Tsorotiotis struck first, upsetting No. 36 Alastair Gray and Alex Rybakov 6-3. In their first match as pair, Spencer Papa and Max Stewart cliched the opening point with a 6-3 win over Sander Jong and Luc Fomba at the No. 3 line.
When play was halted Jake Van Emburgh and Ferran Calvo led Bertus Kruger and Reese Stalder 5-4 on court two.
No. 67 Bakshi was the first OU player off the court in singles, handling No. 110 Stalder for his fifth win over a ranked opponent. Bakshi cruised through the first set 6-3 before giving up just two games in the second to seal it 6-2 and give OU a 2-0 lead in the match.
On court three, Calvo took down Kruger in straight sets to push the Sooners’ lead to 3-0. The first frame saw ties at every game up to 4-all, but Calvo pulled away 6-4. The senior held Kruger to just three games in the second before securing it 6-3.
TCU tied the match at 3-all. Stewart was defeated by Jong 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 6 line before No. 31 Papa was defeated by No. 4 Rybakov 6-4, 6-2 on court one. Beiler fell Fomba 6-4, 6-4 on court five.
The match came down to court two, where No. 63 Van Emburgh was outlasted by No. 24 Gray in a three-setter, 6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-4.
The Sooners wrap up the regular season Sunday as they host No. 1 Texas at 12:30 p.m. The match will be broadcast on Fox Sports Oklahoma Plus.
OU will honor seniors Bakshi, Calvo and Papa prior to the match, which will be the final home contest of their careers. Free pizza will be provided while supplies last.
