Sooners Announce 125th Year of Football Celebration
NORMAN — In 1895, 12 years before Oklahoma achieved statehood, a gentleman named John Harts was holding court in a downtown Norman barber shop when he voiced six immortal words. "Let's get up a football team!" he exclaimed.
Little did Harts know that the sport of football would eventually impact the lives of so many Oklahomans.
On an early November day in Norman later that year, Harts captained the University of Oklahoma football squad in its first-ever game. Though the Oklahoma City town team opponent dominated that initial contest, the foundation was laid for one of the most successful collegiate athletics programs of all-time in any sport.
The 2019 Oklahoma football campaign will mark the 125th in the illustrious history of the program, and the OU Athletics Department announced it will celebrate that colorful and accomplished past throughout the upcoming season. The Sooners unveiled on Thursday their "125" logo that will be featured on the back of players' helmets and on Owen Field during the 2019 season, as well as on various fan merchandise and apparel. Some of those items are already available for purchase at OU's new stadium store (The Sooner Shop) and online at Shop.SoonerSports.com.
As part of the 125th-year celebration, the OU Athletics Department is also planning a multitude of content, collectibles and activities that will honor the Sooners' storied history. Those elements will be revealed this summer and fall.
OU, which has won the last four Big 12 championships, opens the 2019 season Aug. 31 when it hosts Houston.
