NORMAN – Oklahoma’s Brenna Dowell has been named the South Central Region Gymnast of the Year, the Women’s College Gymnastics Association (WCGA) announced Wednesday.

Dowell, who was also the 2019 Big 12 Gymnast of the Year, helped lead Oklahoma to a No. 1 ranking for 12 consecutive weeks and a 26-0 record. Competing in the all-around for the first time in her collegiate career, the Odessa, Mo., native set a career high with a 39.725 and finished the regular season ranked eighth nationally. At the NCAA Athens Regional, Dowell was the all-around champion, the first regional honor of her career.

Dowell appeared in all but one meet for the Sooners in 2019 and hit 95 percent of her routines (43-of-45). She earned four Big 12 Gymnast of the Week accolades and was a three-time All-Big 12 selection on vault, floor and the all-around. Dowell led the Sooners to their eighth consecutive Big 12 Championship, coming in clutch on the final event to secure the victory.

In 2019, Dowell has picked up 17 event titles, leading all Sooners with six all-around titles. In addition, she added four on vault, one on bars, two on beam and four on floor. She scored a perfect 10 on vault on March 15 against Alabama, her second on the event and third of her career.

Nationally, Dowell ranks eighth on vault and floor, 14th on bars and 18th on beam. She boasts season highs of 10.0 on vault, 9.95 on bars, 9.95 on beam and 9.975 on floor. She owns 35 scores of 9.9 or higher, including six on floor.

In the South Central Region, Dowell ranks first in the all-around and on vault, second on floor and fifth on bars and beam. She is one of just two gymnasts in the region to score a perfect 10 on vault, the other being teammate Maggie Nichols.

Dowell and the Sooners will compete at the NCAA Championship in Fort Worth, Texas, April 19-20. The Sooners will be in Semifinal II on Friday, April 19, at 6 p.m. CT at the Fort Worth Convention Center. The meet will air live on ESPNU.
