OU Tops Texas Southern, 10-2
NORMAN – The Oklahoma baseball team scored 10 runs in the final four innings to run past Texas Southern 10-2 Tuesday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Third baseman Brylie Ware tripled in the first run of the sixth inning to put the Sooners (24-10) ahead 2-1 and spark a three-run frame. He scored twice and drove in two runs, hitting a sacrifice fly as part of the four-run eighth inning that made the score 10-2. First baseman Tyler Hardman went 3-for-5 and scored a run, center fielder Brady Harlan went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and left fielder Jordan Vujovich scored three runs in the game.
Freshman Ben Abram improved to 6-0 on the season, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing a run on five hits with four strikeouts. TSU starter Alex Olguin (2-1) pitched 5.0 innings and took the loss for the Tigers (11-22).
The Sooners and Tigers play again at 3 p.m. Wednesday to close out the midweek set.
"When we quit trying to have quality at-bats, then we had quality at-bats,” Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. “They (OU batters) kept at it, but instead of trying so hard, they just were separating strikes and balls. Then we got a hit and got rolling. I think we did a really good job at getting our men into scoring position tonight."
Oklahoma scored a run in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Hardman led off the inning with a single – OU’s first hit of the game – and then scored on an infield base hit by Harlan. The Sooners took the lead with three runs in the sixth on Ware’s triple, a base hit by designated hitter Justin Mitchell and a wild pitch. In the seventh, Blake Brewster drove home a run on a sacrifice fly and second baseman Conor McKenna plated a run with his second single of the game.
The Sooners batted around in the eighth inning. Shortstop Brandon Zaragoza doubled to start the frame and scored on a triple down the right field line by Harlan. Vujovich singled home a run, Ware hit a sacrifice fly and Brewster singled home a run. Brewster was 1-for-1 with two RBIs in his two at bats after substituting for Mitchell in the seventh.
Texas Southern took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by first baseman Oscar Ponce. A bases-loaded hit batter in the eighth inning cut OU’s lead to 6-2.
Sophomore Aaron Brooks pitched a season-high 2.0 innings, striking out three batters. Freshman Wyatt Olds closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning that included two strikeouts.
