Sooners Set to Open Big 12 Play

NORMAN – The Oklahoma women’s tennis team kicks off Big 12 play this weekend to host No. 33 Kansas State Friday and 5 p.m. CT and No. 10 Kansas Sunday at noon.

No. 30 OU enters league play at 10-3 overall. The Sooners have won their last five consecutive matches with two wins over ranked opponents in their most recent weekend of competition. OU downed No. 47 Tulsa 4-3 and No. 39 Gonzaga 4-1, both at home.  

Where They Rank

Two Sooners were ranked in the latest ITA singles release. Oleksandra Korashvili is No. 40 with a 9-3 overall record and three wins over top-25 opponents this season. Camila Romero checks in at No. 121 at 9-3 between courts three and four. In doubles, Romero and partner Martina Capurro are No. 75 and have compiled an 8-3 record at the No. 2 spot.  

Korashvili Back-to-Back Big 12 Player of the Week

Korashvili earned her second straight Big 12 Player of the Week award and her third this season on March 12.

Korashvili was the difference in the Sooners’ 4-3 win against in-state rival Tulsa with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 76 Martina Okalova at the top spot.

Against Gonzaga, Korashvili took down No. 7 Sophie Whittle in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to clinch OU’s 4-1 win against No. 39 Gonzaga.

Sooners Streaking

Korashvili has won her last five straight, with all but one of those wins coming at the top spot.

Romero has won three straight matches between courts three and four.  

Home Court Advantage

The Sooners are 7-1 in matches played at the Headington Family Tennis Center this season. Their sole home loss came at the hands of Texas A&M on Feb. 17.

Scouting Kansas State

The Wildcats come to Norman with a 10-3 record on the season and have won their last three matches. In its last contest, Kansas State shut out No. 40 Wichita State 7-0 at home.

Margot Decker and Maria Linares have split time at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Decker is 8-4 overall and Linares is 6-4 with a 3-0 record on court one. Kaine-Marion Job leads the Wildcats in wins with a 10-2 mark.

In doubles, Job and Ines Mesquita are 6-1 at the No. 2 line.

The teams last met in Manhattan in 2018 when then-No. 50 OU pulled off a 4-1 upset of the No. 38 Wildcats. Current Sooner Jasmine Asghar clinched the victory at the No. 2 line.

Scouting Kansas

No. 10 Kansas enters the weekend at 9-2 overall. The Jayhawks open Big 12 action Friday at No. 11 Oklahoma State before traveling to Norman.

In its last competition, Kansas fell to Washington 4-3 before sweeping Oregon 7-0.

In singles, two Jayhawks were ranked in the latest ITA release. No. 34 Anastasia Rychagova is undefeated (10-0) at the top spot and No. 88 Janet Koch is 6-5 at the No. 2 line. In doubles, Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia are No. 2 nationally and are 8-0 on the season on court one. Rychagova and Sonia Smagina are No. 40 with a 9-1 mark on court two.

Kansas swept the last meeting between the teams 4-0 in Lawrence.

First serve against Kansas State is set for 5 p.m. CT.

The Kansas match is slated for noon CT on Sunday. Sunday is kids day, and free face painting, balloon animals and post-match autographs will be available for fans.
