Sooners Top UT Arlington, 9-1
NORMAN – Freshman Diego Muniz hit a three-run home run and freshman Ben Abram was excellent over 6.0 innings, as the Oklahoma baseball team defeated UT Arlington 9-1 Tuesday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Abram allowed just an unearned run on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts to improve to 4-0 on the season. Muniz’s first career home run was a three-run blast out to left center field in the third inning that made the score 5-0. The Sooners (14-3) jumped out to an 8-0 lead by the fourth inning and rolled past the Mavericks (11-6).
The walk allowed by Abram was his first of the season, after throwing 20 innings without a base on balls. Sophomores Ledgend Smith, Aaron Brooks and Zack Matthews combined to pitch the final three innings, striking out four batters and allowing just two baserunners in that span.
“We wanted to play clean baseball and take care of our opportunity one pitch at a time,” Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. “UTA and (head coach) Darin Thomas do a good job, they have a really good team and a really good record to show for it. We always talk about how did you play against the ball. Did you win two of three pitchers on the mound, which we did. Did we win free bases, and we did. Then you have to execute bunts, execute moving guys over and run the bases well. Every element of our game was good tonight."
Sophomore first baseman Tyler Hardman went 3-for-4 and scored two runs and junior center fielder Brady Harlan went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Senior third baseman Brylie Ware was 2-for-3 and scored twice, and sophomore left fielder Jordan Vujovich reached in all five plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with two walks and a hit by pitch.
Oklahoma scored two runs in the second inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Harlan and a single to left field by junior second baseman Conor McKenna. Ware and Hardman hit back-to-back singles to start the third, setting up Muniz’s home run. OU added three runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Ware and Harlan and a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Brady Lindsly. In the eighth, Harlan singled and moved around to score on a wild pitch to make it 9-1.
UT Arlington scored its lone run in the fifth inning when an error to begin the inning led to a sacrifice fly by third baseman Boone Montgomery. UTA starter Riley Bost (0-1) pitched 1.1 innings and took the loss.
The Sooners play host to Missouri State in a three-game series this weekend at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Game times are 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
