NORMAN  University of Oklahoma senior gymnast Yul Moldauer claimed his third consecutive American Cup all-around title on Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.

Moldauer took home his third-straight title at the World Cup event with an 85.932 tally, edging fellow Team USA gymnast Sam Mikulak by .001, the slimmest margin in American Cup history.

“It was fun, it was really fun going back out there with Sam," said Moldauer following the meet. "The last time we competed with USA on our chest was at worlds and it’s always a great time competing with him because he’s a veteran and competing with him today was fun. We said we were going to make it exciting and I thought it was just a great meet.

“I’m so blessed, I don’t know what to say. I want to say thank you to all the OU coaches, all my club coaches, my family and all my friends and teammates that have helped me get to where I am at today.”

The OU captain and reigning NCAA all-around champion placed first on vault and parallel bars with respective scores of 14.733 and 14.966. He claimed second on floor (14.500) and still rings (14.200) and placed in the top five on the other two events.

“Yul had a great meet and won by the closest margin in history,” said OU head coach Mark Williams. “Sam gave him an opportunity and Yul kept plugging away and made the end really exciting.”

Moldauer became just the third OU gymnast to claim three American Cup titles, joining Bart Conner (1976, ’81, ’82) and Jonathan Horton (2006-07, ’11). He also joins fellow Americans Kurt Thomas (1978-80) and Blaine Wilson (1997-99) as the only gymnasts to win three-straight American Cup titles.

Moldauer and the No. 1 ranked OU men's gymnastics team returns to competition Saturday, March 9, for a matchup against the No. 6 Illinois Fighting Illini at McCasland Field House in Norman. The meet is slated for a 4 p.m. CT start.

The meet will serve as Senior Night for the nine members of the class of 2019. Fans are encouraged to stay in their seats post-meet as the senior recognition ceremony will be held following awards. Tickets can be found here.
