Moldauer Chases Three-Peat at American Cup
NORMAN — University of Oklahoma senior gymnast Yul Moldauer will compete individually at the 2019 American Cup on Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. Action begins at 10:30 a.m. CT at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex and will be broadcast live on The Olympic Channel (10:30 a.m.-Noon) and NBC (Noon-2 p.m.).
“Yul’s been doing well after his weekend out at Winter Cup and his last outing having done the all-around against Michigan last weekend,” said OU head coach Mark Williams. “We’d like to see more of the same this weekend when he competes in Greensboro and competes against some of the best in the world. It’s a great opportunity to be at a World Cup event. He’s excited about the challenge.”
The FIG World Cup event showcases the best gymnasts from around the world as they compete in the one-day competition. OU gymnasts have claimed 10 American Cup titles, the most of any school, dating back to the inaugural meet in 1976 when OU alum Bart Conner won the crown. Moldauer looks to make it a three-peat in the all-around as he claimed the title in 2017 and 2018.
“It’s the same mindset as last year when I was trying to go back-to-back,” said Moldauer. “I just don’t think about the last year and go in there and do my job. Perform the best you can and the results will decide themselves. Getting to compete with these guys is always amazing and a huge honor.”
The Sooners’ co-captain will represent Team USA alongside Olympian and Michigan alumnus Sam Mikulak. Six other countries will be represented in the men’s senior all-around. Moldauer, fresh off an NCAA-season high 88.300 all-around performance versus Michigan Feb. 23, claimed the 2018 American Cup by putting up an 85.964. The U.S. senior men’s national team member won the 2019 Winter Cup all-around title on Feb. 15 in Las Vegas, tallying an 84.500 to edge Mikulak’s 84.450.
Also competing in Greensboro at the Elite Team Cup will be 2019 OU signees Lazarus Barnhill and Jack Freeman. The premier event features nine men’s Regional Teams, each consisting of six junior elite gymnasts. Team scores for the Elite Team Cup will be based on four athletes competing on each event with the top three scores on each event counting.

The No. 1 ranked OU men's gymnastics team returns to competition Saturday, March 9, for a matchup against the No. 6 Illinois Fighting Illini at McCasland Field House in Norman. The meet is slated for a 4 p.m. CT start.
The meet will serve as Senior Night for the nine members of the class of 2019. Fans are encouraged to stay in their seats post-meet as the senior recognition ceremony will be held following awards. Tickets can be found here.
