Lopez Named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week
NORMAN — After an impressive opening weekend in the circle, Oklahoma softball junior Mariah Lopez has been named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
This marks Lopez’s second career weekly honor from the conference and her first since her freshman season.
The Saugus, Calif., native went 2-0 in two starts at the GCU Kickoff. Entering the 2019 season with one solo shutout in her career, Lopez recorded a shutout in both of her appearances. She was the only pitcher in the league to record multiple shutouts last weekend.
Lopez threw a one-hitter against both Syracuse on Friday and Charlotte on Saturday, finishing with a league-best .051 opponent batting average.
Additionally, she struck out 12 batters against Syracuse and 10 against Charlotte. Prior to this weekend, Lopez had one career game with double-digit strikeouts. She finished the opening weekend of action with 12.83 strikeouts per seven innings pitched, the highest average in the Big 12.
Of the five Big 12 pitchers who had a 0.00 ERA this week, Lopez led the group with 12.0 innings pitched. She was one of two conference pitchers to throw two complete games over the weekend, and she was the only pitcher to earn wins in both.
Led by Lopez, the Oklahoma pitching staff finished the weekend leading the league in ERA (0.48), strikeout rate (10.14 K/7IP), walk rate (1.45 BB/7IP) and opponent batting average (.102).
Up next, Lopez and the Sooners head to the inaugural St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational Feb. 14-16 in Clearwater, Fla. Oklahoma is scheduled to face No. 13/15 Kentucky, RV/RV Notre Dame, Florida Atlantic, No. 1/3 Florida State and RV/RV Hofstra in the tournament.
