Sooners Hold Steady at No. 1

NORMAN –Through two weeks of competition, the Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team is holding steady in the top spot.
After posting the best score in the nation the past two weeks, the Sooners are averaging a 197.938. UCLA remained in second with a 197.475 average, followed by Florida, which opened its season with a 197.300. Utah (197.213) and LSU (196.525) round out the top five.
The Sooners also hold the top mark on three of four events. OU is ranked No. 1 on vault (49.563 average), bars (49.500) and beam (49.450) and ranked third on floor (49.425).
Seven Sooners hold 17 individual national rankings, with an OU gymnast ranked in the top three on every event and the all-around. Junior Maggie Nichols holds the top spot in the all-around with a 39.700 average, while senior Brenna Dowell sits in sixth with a 39.550 average.
Six athletes are ranked on vault, led by Nichols and junior Jade Degouveia who are tied for third with a 9.950 average. Senior Nicole Lehrmann is also in the top 10 as she sits in eighth with a 9.912 average. Dowell and junior Bre Showers share a spot at No. 11 (9.875) and freshman Olivia Trautman is in a tie for 19th with an average score of 9.863.
On bars, Dowell, Lehrmann and Nichols share third with a 9.925 average. Nichols and freshman Anastasia Webb share third on beam (9.925), while Dowell and Lehrmann sit in a tie for No. 15 (9.875).
Trautman is ranked third on floor with a 9.938 average. Nichols comes in at No. 13 (9.9) and Dowell and Webb are tied for 24th (9.875).
The Sooners will be on the road at North Carolina, Saturday, Jan. 19. The meet is slated for a 1 p.m. CT start.
