OU Ready for Virginia Duals
HAMPTON, Va. — The Oklahoma wrestling team hits the road Friday for the Virginia Duals, held Jan. 11-12 in Hampton, Va. The Sooners will open the tournament with No. 16 and defending champion Arizona State on Friday at 8 a.m. CT.
The winner of that dual will face the winner of Lock Haven/Virginia on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. The championship is set for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CT.
The eight-team tournament field features top-25 opponents in No. 16 Arizona State, No. 20 Lock Haven and No. 13 Virginia Tech.
This will be the Sooners’ third straight appearance at the Virginia Duals. OU took fourth in the tournament in 2018.
Last Time Out
OU enters the weekend at 2-1 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 action. In its last weekend of competition, Oklahoma downed West Virginia 26-17, before taking No. 20 Pitt to the wire in a narrow 20-17 loss.
The Sooners were led by redshirt freshman Anthony Mantanona, who picked up back-to-back pins against WVU and Pitt. Mantanona defeated the Mountaineers’ James Wujeck in 1:27 and Pitt’s Gregg Harvey in just 0:55.
Against West Virginia, OU’s Kayne MacCallum also had pin, defeating Jackson Moomau in 2:07 in the 184 pounds bout. At 141, Dom Demas got his third tech fall of the season in an 18-1 victory over Luke Martin, while Justin Thomas (157) won a thriller against Zach Moore, scoring a takedown with 11 seconds on the clock to seal a 7-4 victory.
Two OU wrestlers head to the Virginia Duals with perfect records in duals action. Dom Demas is 4-0 at 141, while at 125, Christian Moody is 3-0.
Demas’ run includes an upset win over then-No. 6 Kaid Brock of Oklahoma State via a 7-6 decision. The Columbus, Ohio, native is now 3-1 against ranked opponents.
OU in the Rankings
Demas is the Sooners’ representative in the InterMat rankings, where he is No. 7 in his weight class, good for his highest ranking this season. The redshirt freshman is No. 8 in FloWrestling’s latest release and No. 8 in the Trackwrestling rankings.
Fellow redshirt freshman Jake Woodley (197) was tabbed No. 24 by Trackwrestling, and as a team, the Sooners are T-36 in the same rankings.
