NORMAN – Oklahoma wrestling hits the road for a non-conference matchup with Appalachian State (2-4) Sunday afternoon inside Varsity Gym in Boone, N.C.

Last Time Out

The Sooners suffered a 41-2 loss at No. 4 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla., in their first dual match of the season. Redshirt freshman Dom Demas came away with OU’s sole win of the match. Then ranked No. 16, Demas pulled off an upset of Oklahoma State’s No. 6 Kaid Brock in a 7-6 decision to put the Sooners on the board.  

Sooners in the Rankings

Four OU wrestlers appeared in Trackwrestling’s most recent rankings. At 125 pounds, Christian Moody checked in at No. 24, and Demas is No. 8 at 141. Jake Woodley ranks 20th at 197, and heavyweight Jake Boyd is No. 24 in his division.

Demas is also ranked No. 8 by InterMat, rising eight spots from his previous mark of No. 16. He was also tabbed No. 8 by FloWrestling and No. 9 in The Open Mat’s rankings.

Demas Named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week

Demas was named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season following his upset win at OSU. The Columbus, Ohio, native is the first OU wrestler to receive multiple Big 12 weekly awards in a season since Kendric Maple collected four in 2013. Demas also got a nod from The Open Mat, who named him College Wrestler of the Week for Dec. 10.

Scouting the Mountaineers

Appalachian State has compiled a 2-4 record on the season. The Mountaineers have dropped their last three dual matches to No. 15 North Carolina (28-7), Ohio (25-16) and No. 7 NC State (29-9).

Randall Diabe (197 pounds) is the Mountaineers’ representative in the InterMat rankings, checking in at No. 18 with an 11-3 record. Diabe was named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Month for November.
