Women's Tennis Announces Spring Slate
NORMAN – University of Oklahoma Head Women’s Tennis Coach Audra Cohen and Vice President and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione announced the 2019 OU women’s tennis schedule Thursday.
Oklahoma’s schedule includes 11 home contests and 14 matchups with teams who qualified for the 2018 NCAA Championships. Eight of the Sooners’ 2019 opponents finished last season in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s top 25.
“This is one of the toughest schedules we have ever had, and with this challenging slate comes great opportunity to play against the best programs in the country,” said Cohen. “We are a young team with a serious amount of talent, and we are motivated to make the most of our season of opportunity.”
OU opens the season on January 19 with a doubleheader featuring SMU and Oral Roberts. The Sooners hit the road for ITA Kickoff Weekend January 25-26 at Vanderbilt, where they will face Winthrop in the first round as Vanderbilt and Memphis face off on the other side of the bracket. The winners of those matches will play each other Jan. 27 with a trip to the ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championships (held Feb. 8-11 in Seattle, Wash.) on the line.
Oklahoma will play a road match at Arkansas on Feb. 3 before coming home to host Arizona State (Feb. 9) and Texas A&M (Feb. 17). The Sooners then take a trip to the Sunshine State to meet Florida on Feb. 22 and USF on Feb. 24.
OU returns to the Headington Family Tennis Center for six straight matches, beginning with a doubleheader against Purdue and UMKC on March 3. The Sooners welcome in-state rival Tulsa on March 8 and Gonzaga on March 9 before opening Big 12 play with Kansas State (March 15) and Kansas (March 17).
OU heads to West Virginia on March 22, followed by a clash at Iowa State March 24. Big 12 action continues with Texas (March 29) and Baylor (March 31) at home.
The Sooners travel to face Wichita State in a non-conference contest on April 6. OU closes out the Big 12 slate with three road matches at Oklahoma State (April 7), Texas Tech (April 12) and TCU (April 14).
The Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championships will be held in Lawrence, Kan., April 18-21.
NCAA Regionals are set for May 3-5, with the winners advancing to Super Regionals May 10-11. Regionals and Super Regionals will take place at campus sites. Team Championships will be held May 18-22 in Orlando, Fla., at the USTA National Campus.
The NCAA Individual Championships will also take place at the National Campus May 23-28.
