Freshmen Shine in 2-1 Victory Over Utah
SALT LAKE CITY - A pair of freshmen led the Oklahoma soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Utah Thursday night in Salt Lake City.
Freshmen Hailey Davidson and Megan Reilly each tallied a goal in the victory. Davidson notched her fourth of the season while Reilly picked up the game-winner with her first career score.
“With the schedule we have, any positive road result is going to be something you earn, and we did that tonight,” head coach Matt Potter said. “This was a team performance highlighted by good play in our possession and how we got to the goal, coupled with discipline in our team defending. We created and took our chances well and I’m happy for all. We now have to rest up and regroup to go again Saturday night.”
The Sooners trailed early as a handball set up a Utah penalty kick in the third minute, giving the Utes a 1-0 lead.
In the 17th minute, Davidson tied things up with a beautiful goal from six yards out. Senior Paige Welch played the ball across the field into Davidson who collected it and beat the final defender before slotting the ball into the far side of the goal.
“I was very pleased with the response of the team,” Potter said. “It would have been easy to let the game get away from us, but it didn’t.”
With a back-and-forth match in the second half as both teams fought to find the go-ahead goal, the Sooners would turn to another freshman for the game winner.
In the 73rd minute, freshman Olivia Smith sent a deep cross into Reilly just outside the six-yard box. Reilly headed the ball inside the near post for her first collegiate goal.
The Sooner defense would keep the Utes from coming back, setting up the Sooners first road win this season.
The two teams ended the night with 11 shots apiece and sophomore goalkeeper McKinley Crone finished with five saves.
