For just the second time in the last 25 years, Oklahoma enters the season with only one freshman on its roster.

The Sooners reloaded much of their 2018-19 roster with experienced veterans – including two graduate transfers with only one year of eligibility remaining. Their youngest newcomer, however, is one that Lon Kruger plans to invest in becoming a key contributor for seasons to come.

Jamal Bieniemy is a 6-4 combo guard out of Tompkins High School in Katy, Texas. The guard comes to Oklahoma after leading Tompkins to the Texas 6A Championship Game during his senior year. At the conclusion of the season, he was named his district’s MVP and was selected to USA Today’s All-USA Texas Boys Basketball Second Team.

“Jamal is a terrific young guy,” said Kruger. “Very, very good basketball player, makes good basketball plays, scores when that’s the play, drives and kicks when that’s the play. He’s very active defensively, very involved all the time and has good all-around awareness. His instincts are outstanding. He's excited to be here and we’re excited to have him.”

Ranked a top-30 shooting guard by both ESPN.com and 247Sports, Bieniemy is prepared to make an immediate impact on the collegiate level. His versatility at multiple guard positions will also give Kruger options on how to utilize his lone rookie.

“My mindset going into my freshman year is just to play my game, play how I was taught and just do the right things,” said Bieniemy. “Play hard all the time, play smart and always come out with the win. That’s our main goal as a team and that’s my main goal as a player – to come out with the win.”

A four-star recruit, Bieniemy signed with the Sooners last November and is excited to finally join the Sooner roster.

“I chose Oklahoma because of the family,” said Bieniemy. “The fan base is great, the atmosphere is amazing here…it’s just a great place for a person to succeed and be the best person they can be.”
