Sooners No. 7 in Preseason AP Top 25

NORMAN — For the 16th time in the last 18 years, the Oklahoma football team is ranked in the Associated Press preseason top 10. The AP released its preseason top 25 Monday morning and OU is ranked No. 7.

The Sooners, who are coming off a third straight Big 12 title and a second College Football Playoff appearance in the last three years, accumulated 1,173 points in the poll. Alabama is ranked No. 1 (1,505 points, 42 first-place votes), Clemson is No. 2 (1,476; 18), Georgia is No. 3 (1,350), Wisconsin is No. 4 (1,271; one), Ohio State is No. 5 (1,256) and Washington is No. 6 (1,215).

This marks the 19th straight year that OU has appeared in the preseason AP Top 25, which is the second longest current string behind Ohio State (30).

This also represents the 60th time that Oklahoma has appeared in the preseason AP poll, second most behind Ohio State (65 times). OU's all-time average preseason AP rank is 6.7, best in the nation (Michigan is second at 7.4).

Additionally, of its 60 appearances in the AP preseason poll, 42 have seen OU ranked seventh or higher.

The Sooners, who have finished in the AP’s top five each of the last three seasons, are one of four Big 12 teams in this year's preseason AP poll. TCU is ranked No. 16, West Virginia is No. 17 and Texas is No. 23. Oklahoma State is the top Big 12 team among those receiving votes with 51 points (29th overall). Kansas State received 10 points (36th overall) and Iowa State eight points (37th).

Oklahoma, which is No. 5 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll, was the preseason pick to win the Big 12 Conference by the media and boasts seven players on the 2018 Preseason All-Big 12 Team.

Junior running back Rodney Anderson, junior wide receiver Marquise Brown, sophomore tight end Grant Calcaterra, junior offensive lineman Bobby Evans, senior offensive lineman Ben Powers and senior kicker/punter Austin Seibert were among the 29 players who were named to the all-conference squad by position. Freshman defensive back Brendan Radley-Hiles was named Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.

OU opens the 2018 season by hosting Florida Atlantic on Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. CT at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The Owls received 38 points in the preseason coaches poll, which equates to the No. 30 overall spot.
