FORTALEZA, Brazil Oklahoma wrestling’s Anthony Mantanona dominated a weekend of competition at the Junior Pan American Championships in Fortaleza, Brazil, bringing home two medals for Team USA. The rising redshirt freshman captured the bronze in the 77 kg weight class of the Greco-Roman event on Friday and followed that performance up with a gold medal in the freestyle’s 79 kg division Sunday.

During the freestyle competition, the Palm Desert, Calif., native made quick work of all four of his opponents to win the gold. Mantanona grabbed his first victory of the day over Ecuador’s Eli Gomez Tejeda, pinning him in 31 seconds. His next victory was an 11-0 rout of Brazil’s Phelipe Dos Santos in the second round and a 10-0 shutout against Antony Iparraguirre Pereyra of Peru to advance to the gold match.

Mantanona impressed again in the final, pinning Miguel Ornelas of Mexico in just 21 seconds to win the gold in his weight class.

During Friday’s Greco-Roman competition, Mantanona won his pool with victories over Bastian Leon Vega of Chile (9-0) and Gomez Tejeda, 8-0.

In the finals bracket, Mantanona lost his first match to Jhonny Arias Berdugo (Colombia), by cautions. He then moved to the third place match for a rematch with Gomez Tejeda, winning by pin in 90 seconds to capture the bronze.

Mantanona was one of just four American wrestlers to compete in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman events, and all four garnered two medals on the weekend.
