INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – Anthony Mantanona of the Oklahoma wrestling team will represent the Sooners on the UWW (U20) Greco-Roman World Team after winning his weight class at the 2018 UWW Greco-Roman World Team Trial held Friday.
In the 77 kg event, Mantanona defeated Josh Anderson (NMU-OTS/MWC) in the final round, set as a best-two-out-of-three series. Mantanona won the first match in a 14-12 decision. Mantanona finished strong, winning the final bout by a pin in just 1:11 to make the roster.
Mantanona is the second Sooner to qualify for a World team this summer, joining his teammate Dom Demas, who qualified at the UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials in Rochester, Minn. in May.
Demas also participated in Friday’s event, where he took second in the 67 kg weight class. Demas won his first match in a tech fall before picking up two decisions (9-8 and 4-3) to advance to the final. In the best-two-out-of-three series, Demas defeated Peyton Omana (unattached) in a 5-4 decision before losing to Omana in a tech fall (3:00) and an 8-2 decision to finish runner up.
Matthew Waddell finished fourth in the 87 kg class, beating Trenton Schultz (Bear Wrestling Club) in a tech fall in 2:53 in the first round before falling to George Sikes (NMU-OTS) in a 6-2 decision. He then moved to the consolation bracket, where he picked up a tech fall win in 1:26 over Kaleb Gade (Olympian Wrestling). In the third place match, Waddell was defeated by Nicholas Casperson (Legends of Gold) in a tech fall (0:38).
