NORMAN – Oklahoma baseball right-handed pitcher Jake Irvin was recognized for his commitment in the classroom as the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced on Friday.

Irvin, a native of Bloomington, Minn., is the first Sooner in program history to receive the award, which was created by the Big 12 prior to the 2012-13 academic year.

Irvin, who has served as OU’s Friday night starter for each of the last two seasons, made 16 starts in 2018 and finished with a 6-2 record and a 3.41 ERA. He earned All-America Second Team honors from Collegiate Baseball, while leading the Big 12 with 115 strikeouts in 95 innings pitched.

Irvin was also named to the All-Big 12 First Team in 2018 and earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors in 2017.

In the classroom, Irvin is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 first team selection and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team in 2017. He boasts a 3.83 GPA as a human resources management major.

Irvin was recently selected as the 131st overall pick in the fourth round of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Washington Nationals.
