Nine Sooners Picked in 2018 MLB Draft

NORMAN –The Oklahoma baseball team concluded the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft with four Sooners drafted on Wednesday, bringing OU’s total to nine selections in the 40-round draft.

OU’s nine draft picks are the most for the Sooners since 11 players were selected in the 2015 MLB Draft.

Junior right-handed pitcher Kyle Tyler was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 20th round. Tyler posted a 2.97 ERA to go along with a 6-2 record. During his junior season, Tyler recorded 84 strikeouts in 66.2 innings pitched and made nine starts, while appearing in 21 games.

Two Sooners were drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 23rd and 26th rounds. Junior right-handed pitcher Lane Ramsey had his named called in the 23rd round.

The Oklahoma City, Okla, native made 14 appearances and started three times as a junior, finishing with a 2-1 record. Ramsey struck out 13 and posted a 5.24 ERA in 22.1 innings pitched.

Senior right-handed pitcher Devon Perez was also selected by the White Sox in the 26th round. Perez had a 5.61 ERA to go along with a 5-6 record during his senior season.

As a junior, Perez earned All-Big 12 honorable mention honors with a 6-2 record with a 3.50 ERA in eight starts and 14 appearances. The Ashburn, Va., native struck out 81 in 64.1 innings pitched during the 2017 season.

Junior right-handed reliever Connor Berry was picked in the 31st round by the Boston Red Sox. Berry ranked second on the team with seven saves in 2018. He appeared in 22 games, posting a 1.35 ERA in 20 innings pitched. As a junior, Berry limited opponents to a .191 average and earned an All-Big 12 honorable mention selection.

OU’s Kyler Murray (No. 9 overall, Oakland Athletics) and Steele Walker (No. 46 overall, Chicago White Sox) were both in the first two rounds of the draft. Jake Irvin (Fourth round, Washington Nationals), Austin Hansen (Eighth round, Houston Astros) and Cade Harris (10th round, Colorado Rockies) were drafted on Tuesday.  

Oklahoma’s nine selections in the 2018 MLB Draft were the second-most by a Big 12 team and ranks sixth nationally.

A total of 272 players have been drafted into Major League Baseball out of Oklahoma since 1967 and at least one player has been drafted every year since 1970. OU has had at least one player picked in the top 10 in every MLB Draft since 2011.
