Sooners Fall in 10 Innings at Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Oklahoma baseball team suffered a 6-5 loss in 10 innings to Kansas on Thursday night in front 1,139 fans at Hoglund Ballpark. The Sooners fall to 33-20 overall and 13-9 in Big 12 play, while the Jayhawks improved to 24-27 and 7-14 in the league.

OU took a 5-1 lead to the bottom of the ninth inning, but Kansas answered with four runs in the bottom half of the frame as Luke Bakula’s two-run home run off of OU reliever Austin Hansen to left field tied the game at 5-5 to force extra innings.

Kansas’ James Consentino hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning to complete the Jayhawks’ comeback victory.

With the game knotted at 1-1 in the top of the ninth, OU scored four runs to take the lead. Cade Harris’ two-out RBI double off the right field wall in the put the Sooners ahead, scoring Kyle Mendenhall from second. After Brandon Zaragoza reached on a walk, Steele Walker drilled his second home run, a three-run opposite field blast to left center to push OU’s lead to 5-1. 

Walker led the Sooners at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs, two runs scored and four RBI. The two-home run night for Walker marked his first since April 10 against Little Rock and the junior’s four RBI also matched a season high. The junior tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning with a towering solo blast to right field.

Harris was 2-for-5 for the Sooners with one RBI and a run scored, while Zaragoza finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Kyle Mendenhall, Justin Mitchell and Brylie Ware each recorded one hit apiece.

OU right-handed pitcher Devon Perez took the loss (5-4), giving up the walk-off home run in the 10th inning out of the bullpen. In his 14th start of the season, junior Jake Irvin tossed seven innings and gave up one run on three hits, while striking nine in a no-decision effort.  

Jayhawk reliever Zack Leban (4-3) earned the victory, throwing one inning and striking out two. Kansas starting pitcher Jackson Goddard held OU to one run and six hits with 11 strikeouts in seven innings of work.

First pitch for game two of the series is slated for 6:05 p.m. CT at Hoglund Ballpark. The game will be streamed live on the WatchESPN app or WatchESPN.com. Freshman left-hander Levi Prater is scheduled to start Saturday’s contest.
