NORMAN – The No. 14 Oklahoma men’s tennis team swept No. 43 Utah, 4-0, Friday to advance to the second round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships.

The Sooners grabbed the doubles point before notching three quick singles wins to shutout the Utes. OU improves to 20-5 on the year, while Utah finishes the season at 19-9.

“We’re excited to get through Utah,” said head coach Nick Crowell. “To get that doubles point, our guys had to come out with a lot of energy and they established early on that we would be here all day long. We got six first sets in singles, and Utah made a good push back in those second sets, but our guys stayed strong.”

In doubles, Ferran Calvo and Stefano Tsorotiotis got things started for the Sooners, rolling past Azat Hankuliyev and Dan Little, 6-1, at the No. 3 line.

No. 44 Alex Bakshi and Jake Van Emburgh captured the point for OU with a 6-4 victory over Randy Cory and Russell Benkaim at the top spot.

When play was halted, Jochen Bertsch and Adrian Oetzbach were locked up at 4-all with Egbert Weverink and Joe Woolley.

Van Emburgh picked picked up OU’s first singles win of the day, rolling to a 6-1, 6-3, victory over David Micevski at the No. 2 line.

No. 30 Bakshi made quick work of No. 101 Dan Little, 6-2, 6-2, at the top spot, never trailing in the match. The win was good for Bakshi’s eighth straight victory.

Tsorotiotis clinched the match for OU with a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win over Slava Shainyan from the No. 6 line. The freshman rolled through his first set, before Shainyan fired back in the second frame. Tsorotiotis worked his way back from a 5-2 deficit to force a tiebreaker. Tsorotiotis and Shainyan tied the breaker at every point before Tsorotiotis closed out the set and the match.

“Stefano (Tsorotiotis) was clutch down there at number six,” said Crowell. “He was down 5-2 in the second set and was down set point, but he stayed the course like he has all season long and we have a lot of confidence in him right now.”

When play was abandoned, No. 63 Calvo led Santiago Sierra, 4-2, in the second set on court three. Calvo won the first frame, 6-4.

On court four, Oetzbach led Weverink, 2-1, in the third set. Oetzbach won set one handily, 6-4, before Weverink claimed the second frame, 6-3.

Bertsch was locked in at 2-2 in the third set with Cory. Bertsch rolled to a 6-2 victory in the first frame, but Cory answered and grabbed set two, 6-3.

The Sooners will face No. 37 Minnesota tomorrow at noon CT at the Headington Family Tennis Center, with the winner of that match advancing to the Sweet 16, held at Wake Forest University.
