NORMAN — Oklahoma utility player Jocelyn Alo has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2018 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Thursday.
Named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year on Wednesday, Alo leads the country in home runs (23) and home runs per game (0.46). She ranks fourth nationally in slugging (.964), fifth in RBIs per game (1.2) and eighth in RBIs (60) and total bases (67) and leads the Sooners in on-base percentage (.544) and walks (37) this season.
Additionally, the Hauula, Hawaii, product finished conference play ranking first in home runs (9), walks (17), runs scored (18), RBIs (25), total bases (46) and slugging percentage (.979) while finishing second in on-base percentage (.554).
Alo was named Big 12 Player of the Week and the Louisville/Slugger NFCA Division I National Player of the Week following her performance in the Texas Tech series on March 23-25.
Alo is joined as a finalist by Meghan Beaubien (Michigan), Mia Davidson (Mississippi State), Mary Haff (Arkansas), Janae Jefferson (Texas), Aaliyah Jordan (UCLA), Rachel Lewis (Northwestern), Gabbie Plain (Washington), Katie Prebble (Gardner-Webb) and Sydney Sherrill (Florida State).
This is the fifth season that the NFCA will name a Freshman of the Year. In 2015, now-senior Sooner Paige Parker was named the winner.
The top three finalists will be revealed on May 23, and the 2018 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year will be announced on May 29.
