Group of Sooners Leave Vegas With Hardware

NORMAN – Oklahoma freshmen Dom Demas, Anthony Mantanona, Matthew Waddell and Jakob Woodley left Las Vegas with hardware following the prestigious 2018 Marine Cup US Open Wrestling Championships.

In the junior freestyle competition, Demas earned the title in the 65 kg weight class, defeating Iowa’s Max Murin, 10-3, in the final bout. Demas earned victories by major decision in both the round of 16 and quarterfinals over Breyden Bailey (Indiana) and Navonte Demison (Arizona State), respectively.

Demas, a Columbus, Ohio, native, took down Kaden Gfeller of Oklahoma State’s Cowboy Wrestling Club, 6-3, in the semifinal. Demas also reached the championship bout in the Junior Greco event, finishing as runner-up to Peyton Omania.

Mantanona represented Oklahoma in a big way, finishing as champion at 77 kg with an 8-0 win by major decision over Jake Hendricks in the championship bout. Mantanona, of Palm Desert, Calif., earned another 8-0 win by major decision in the quarterfinals over Andrew Torres of Arizona.

Woodley finished third place at 92 kg in Junior Freestyle with a win over Jacob Raschka. On the way there, Woodley defeated Connor Corbin of Iowa, 6-0, and Danny Salas of Fresno, Calif., 11-1. Waddell also earned a third-place finish, his at 87 kg in Junior Greco.

Fellow freshman Jake Boyd notched two wins in Junior Freestyle as well, with an opening round win Zachary Knighton by major decision, 12-1, and a 10-0 win over Gary Traub in the quarterfinals.
