STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 18 Oklahoma dropped the Bedlam series opener to No. 17 Oklahoma State, 8-0, Friday night inside Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. The Sooners fell to 28-16 overall and 10-6 in the Big 12 play, while Oklahoma State improved to 25-14-1 and 13-3 in league play.
Oklahoma was shut out for the first time this season as Oklahoma State left-hander Carson Teel limited the Sooners to just five hits and picked up 12 strikeouts to earn the victory.
The Cowboys hit a home run in each of the first three innings to jump out to an early lead against OU right-hander Jake Irvin.
Oklahoma State’s Matt Kroon hit a solo home run to left center to open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. The Cowboys pushed their lead to 3-0 in the second on Cade Cabbiness’ two-run shot to right center. Colin Simpson’s led off the third inning with a solo home run to extend Oklahoma State’s advantage to 4-0.
In the middle innings, OU was able to get the leadoff runner aboard, but could not scratch a run against Teel (6-2), who allowed just six runners to reach and walked one in eight innings of work.
After Irvin was lifted in the sixth inning, the Cowboys plated four runs in the frame against the OU bullpen.
Irvin (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, despite picking up his third game with 10-plus strikeouts this season. The junior surrendered five runs on seven hits and did not allow a walk in five innings of work.
Brylie Ware and Brandon Zaragoza each finished with two hits apiece to lead the Sooners. Ware doubled and finished 2-for-2, while Zaragoza was 2-for-4 at the plate. Steele Walker extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the top of the ninth inning.
The next two games of the series will take place at ONEOK Field in Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. CT for Saturday night’s matchup.
