No. 50 Sooners Upset No. 38 Kansas State
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The No. 50 Oklahoma women’s tennis team pulled off a road upset of No. 38 Kansas State Friday, taking down the Wildcats, 4-1.
The Sooners opened the match with the doubles point in thrilling fashion, then picked up singles wins on the top three courts to seal the victory.
"I'm very proud of how well we competed today. We brought positive energy on every court from start to finish, and in moments of adversity we stepped up with confidence," said head coach Audra Cohen.
With the win, OU improves to 14-10 on the season and 4-4 in conference play. K-State drops to 14-8 and 3-3 in the Big 12.
In doubles, Kansas State struck first when OU’s Simran Sethi and Camila Romero were defeated by K-State's Rosanna Maffei and Ines Mesquita, 6-1.
The Sooners evened things up with a come-from-behind 7-5 victory by Christie Brigante and Jasmine Asghar on court one. The pair saved two match points and won five straight games to close out the set after trailing 5-3.
Seniors Lily Miyazaki and Malene Stripp captured the point for OU with a 7-6 (2) win over Maria Linares and Anna Turco at the No. 2 line. The Sooners led the match 5-3 before Linares and Turco came back to send the court to a tiebreaker, but it was Miyazaki and Stripp who held on to seal the doubles point for Oklahoma.
In singles action, No. 38 Miyazaki downed K-State’s Margot Decker, 6-4, 6-1, to pick up her 14th singles victory of the season. In the first set, Miyazki trailed 3-1 before rallying back to take the frame to earn a straight-set win.
Brigante picked up her fourth consecutive singles victory with a 7-6 (2), 6-4, win over the Wildcats’ Costamagna from the No. 3 line. In the first set, Brigante trailed 5-3 before saving two match points and sending the frame to a tiebreaker.
Asghar clinched the match for OU after a marathon match on court two. The sophomore took down Kansas State’s Linares, 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-2. In her first set, Asghar traded games with Linares to send the frame to a tiebreaker, which she dominated. Linares came back to claim the second set to force a deciding frame, but Asghar used an early break of serve to clinch the match for the Sooners.
On court four, Romero fell to K-State's Turco, 6-4, 6-1, to give the Wildcats their only point in the match.
When play was halted, Sethi was in a third-set battle with K-State’s Maffei on court five. Sethi came out on top of a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4), in the first set before Maffei roared back to take set two, 6-2.
OU’s Stripp was also playing a deciding frame with Ines Mesquita, leading 2-1. Stripp held on to win a first-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), before dropping set two, 6-4.
