NORMAN – The No. 4 Oklahoma men’s golf team is in third place after two rounds at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at the par-71, 7,032-yard Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
The Sooners carded a 282 (-2) in the first round of action and a 271 (-13) in the second to grab sole possession of third place with a 36-hole total of 553 (-15), just three shots back of the lead. OU’s second-round 271 marked the Sooners’ second-lowest 18-hole round of the season.
Host Arizona State and UNLV share the lead at 550 (-18) through two rounds. Baylor is in fourth place at 557 (-11), while Arizona is in fifth heading into Sunday’s round at 562 (-2).
Redshirt sophomore Quade Cummins is tied for third place on the individual leaderboard through 36 holes at 134 (-8). Cummins matched his career low twice on Saturday, carding a pair of 67s on his scorecard. The redshirt sophomore opened the day with a bogey-free first round and totaled nine birdies during Saturday’s two rounds.
“Quade keeps improving and showing he is ready to be a big-time player,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “Brad (Dalke) had a great afternoon after not playing well this morning. It’s always nice seeing guys bounce back like that. Sunday is a big day for us and our guys will be looking forward to it.”
Junior Blaine Hale is tied for ninth place with a 36-hole 139 (-3) through two rounds. Hale posted a 70 (-1) to open the tournament on Saturday and followed up with a 69 (-2) to close out the day. The junior closed out the second round with a trio of birdies on the back to move into the top 10 on the individual leaderboard.
Junior Brad Dalke heads into the final round tied for 24th place at even-par 142. Dalke rebounded from a 76 (+5) in the first round by firing a 66 (-5) to wrap up the second round. The junior’s 66 tied Dalke’s 18-hole season low. In the second round, Dalke recorded five birdies and eagled hole No. 14 to move up on the individual leaderboard.
Sophomore Garett Reband is tied for 28th at 143 (+1) through 36 holes. Reband carded a 70 (-1) and a 73 (+2) in the first and second rounds, respectively.
Rounding out OU’s lineup, senior Grant Hirschman is tied for 37th place heading into Sunday’s final round. Hirschman logged a 75 (+4) in the first round, but closed out the day with a 69 (-2) in the second round.
Playing at the ASU Individual Tournament, senior Rylee Reinertson is in sole possession of second place at 139 (-3). The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played the par-71, 7,316-yard Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz.
After starting the day with an even-par 71, Reinertson fired a 68 (-3) in the second round. The senior picked up nine birdies during Saturday’s 36 holes.
Redshirt sophomore Thomas Johnson is tied for 25th place with a 36-hole 151 (+9). Johnson recorded a 76 (+5) and 75 (+4) in the first and second round, respectively.
