NORMAN – Oklahoma junior Alex Bakshi has been selected as the Big 12 Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Bakshi racked up three victories over ranked opponents during the Sooners’ first weekend of Big 12 competition.
The No. 16 Sooners took down No. 19 Baylor, 4-2, on Friday behind No. 85 Bakshi’s win over No. 44 Johanness Schretter at the No. 1 line in singles. Bakshi won that match handily, 6-1, 6-3. Against Baylor, OU's duo of Bakshi and Jake Van Emburgh shut out the No. 3 doubles tandme in the nation of Schretter and Will Little, 6-0.
OU also defeated No. 29 Texas Tech, 4-1, on Sunday. Bakshi put the Sooners on the board after the team gave up the doubles point with his quick victory over No. 108 Tommy Mylnikov. Bakshi dominated for a 6-1, 6-2, victory on court one.
In the doubles portion of that match, Bakshi and Van Emburgh were just a game away from a win on court one, leading Texas Tech's Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegaya, 5-4.
Bakshi jumped 40 spots in this week’s latest ITA release to No. 45 in the singles rankings, and has compiled a 10-2 record, playing all but three matches in the No. 1 spot in the lineup. With his singles wins over the weekend, he improves to 4-2 against ranked opponents.
Bakshi and Van Emburgh entered the ITA doubles rankings at No. 40 following a successful weekend for the Sooners.
OU continues Big 12 play at No. 9 TCU on Friday at 5:30 p.m. CT and No. 19 Texas on Sunday at 4 p.m. CT.
