NORMAN The No. 50 Oklahoma women’s tennis team opened Big 12 Conference play with a 4-2 win over West Virginia Friday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

“I think it’s a good win for us to get the W, but we definitely have a  lot of things we want to work on,” said head coach Audra Cohen. “The positions where we were willing to work, we executed well and came out with the W that we wanted and we just have to do a better job of it all throughout the lineup.”

The Sooners opened the match with the doubles point.

On court two, Simran Sethi and Camila Romero were defeated by Lyn Yen Choo and Paula Goetz, 6-2, before Christie Brigante and Jasmine Asghar took down Christina Jordan and Sofia Duran, 6-3, from the No. 1 line. The pair trailed 3-1 before tying the frame at three and taking control from there. The Sooners broke at deuce point to win the match, with Asghar hitting a forehand winner down the left sideline to put the court away.

The point came down to court three, where Skyler Miller and Lily Miyazaki took down Anne-Sophia Courteau and Giovanna Caputo, 6-3.

No. 31 Miyazaki grabbed OU’s first singles win of the day with a 6-2, 6-2, rout of Christina Jordan in the top spot.

Asghar grabbed a win on court two, taking down Corteau, 7-6 (4), 6-1. In the first set, Asghar trailed 3-1 before tying the frame and fighting for a tiebreaker, where she prevailed. The sophomore took the momentum to set two, where she rolled to a 6-1 victory.

Sethi clinched the match for the Sooners with a 7-5, 6-0, win over Duran from the No. 4 line. Sethi traded games with Duran through the first set and came out on top of an extended frame. The senior did not look back in the second, cruising to victory without giving up a game.

“They’re pretty confident players,” said Cohen of Asghar and Sethi. “It was tough today with the wind, so it was easy to get kind of frazzled early, and they dealt with that and got through that first set, and as things settled down a little bit, they were able to just cruise control through the second set.”

On court six, Miller was defeated by Giovanna Caputo, 6-3, 6-4. Romero fell to Goetz, 6-2, on court five.

When play was halted, Brigante trailed Choo, 5-4, in the second set after taking the first, 6-4.

The Sooners return to action Sunday, when they host Iowa State at noon. Free pizza will be provided for fans in attendance, and the team will host a free clinic for kids ages 5-13 at 3 p.m. following the match.
