NORMAN —Ten members of the No. 1 Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team were named 2018 Academic All-Big 12 selections, the conference announced Tuesday.

Seniors Natalie Brown, Stefani Catour, Samantha Craus and AJ Jackson, juniors Brenna Dowell, Nicole Lehrmann and Alex Marks and sophomores Maggie Nichols and Bre Showers all received first-team recognition. Sophomore Jade Degouveia earned second-team status. Catour was one of just six athletes who registered a 4.0 GPA.

In each of head coach K.J. Kindler’s 12 seasons at the helm of the OU program, at least five Sooners have received academic accolades from the Big 12. Kindler’s teams have now earned a total of 91 such awards in her time at Oklahoma.

Overall, 32 Big 12 student-athletes earned the academic recognition this year, with 28 being placed on the first team and four on the second team. Oklahoma’s ten selections tied with West Virginia for most in the conference. Iowa State followed with eight, while affiliate member Denver had four honorees.

This marks the third straight year that Brown earned first-team recognition, while Catour, Dowell, Lehrmann and Marks picked up honors for the second time. Jackson, a second-team selection in 2017, earned first-team honors for the first time.

First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while second team picks must hold a GPA of 3.0-3.19.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Up next, the Sooners will have their first double weekend of the season, traveling to Alabama and TWU. OU will face off against Alabama Friday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. CT in Tuscaloosa Ala., before hitting the road to Denton, Texas to take on TWU Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m. CT. The meet against Alabama will air on the SEC Network+.
